Two quotations with similar totals may include very different work. Before comparing price, check tool construction, material, cavity count, trial rounds, sample quantity, inspection, packing, shipping, and after-delivery scope. Anything not written into the quotation may later become a change. Factory and equipment photographs help establish basic capability, but the equipment still needs to match the project. More important is how the supplier handles DFM, issue records, revision control, risk communication, and the correction plan after trials. For confidential or branded programs, also review file permissions and rules for using customer information. A suitable partner is not necessarily the one making the most promises, but the one that explains capability boundaries, assumptions, risks, and execution clearly.

OEM programs usually begin with customer-supplied designs, drawings, and specifications. The manufacturer delivers tooling, components, or production within an approved scope. Revision control, manufacturability, inspection, delivery, and protection of customer intellectual property are central. ODM programs may begin with a function, appearance concept, reference sample, or market need, with the manufacturer contributing more to product definition and structure. Design responsibility, development fees, sample stages, revision rounds, and IP ownership therefore need earlier agreement. In either model, confirm whether the customer owns or is authorized to use the design and trademarks, who owns the tooling, how confidentiality works, what may be published, and how files are handled after the project. Clear boundaries allow both sides to focus on technical work.

Many projects lose time not because a machine is slow, but because information is missing, revisions are mixed, owners are unclear, or decisions remain open. At launch, both sides should define contacts, file location, approval gates, and target timing. Every drawing and requirement should carry a controlled revision. An issue list should identify the question, impact, recommendation, owner, target date, and status. When customer input is required, explain what the delay affects rather than writing only “please reply as soon as possible.” Timely risk reporting from the manufacturer and timely decisions from the customer reduce waiting for both sides. Clear, recorded communication is not additional bureaucracy; it prevents the same issue from circulating through multiple emails and chat groups.
